- With the new Amigas appearing it is a
- decision time for most coders. Do you
- write for 1.3, 2.x, or 3.0?? I have
- coded some small intros on my 2.04
- Amiga Plus. They work fine, use legal
- code, and ²only¹ uses 1.3 compatible
- commands. But when I run it on a 1.3,
- it works on some and doesn't work on
- others. Needless to say I am mega
- freaked out because of it. My pack
- loader for instance failed on a 1.3, I
- don't know why and I did my best to
- debug it. I am sure other coders will
- feel the same. My intro was run on an
- A1200, and ran 6 times faster so you
- could hardly see anything! What was
- most significant was that it actually
- worked and didn't crash. The reason
- behind this is because the A1200 can
- emulate Old, ECS, and AGA chipsets so
- there is a high compatibility rate.
- Back to the main issue. I also write
- utilities and some of these trash up on
- a 1.3. I try to fix them but it has
- gotten to a stage where I am not going
- to lose any more sleep over it.
- Basically I am trashing 1.3. If it
- doesn't work and I can't fix it, TOUGH.
- Many other coders are also adopting
- this attitude, that's why more and more
- utils are KS 2.0 only. There is no
- point in developing sotware on an
- obsolete Amiga when a better OS is
- available. It's like telling 64 owners
- to write programs that work on Vic
- 20's. So if you have a 1.3, upgrade or
- at least KS 2.0. KS 2.0 has many
- benefits and is a much cleaner
- environment. I still don't like the
- idea of writing for 2.0 when 3.0 is out
- but that's life - I don't have the
- money to upgrade my computer! There
- will always be people coding for the
- 1.3 but it is going to become like th
- 64. There is still a scene on the 64,
- but for Amiga owners it is not
- important as it is not of the same
- standard as Amiga productions. New
- productions that have 256,000 colours
- on screen, or 256 colours scrolls are
- going to look slightly (!) better than
- the usual 16 colour scroller. It is
- your choice really as a coder but
- remember this - if you write for newer
- machines you are: ³1.¹ Using a better
- OS and chipset by far. ³2.¹ Cultivating
- skills for the future (why learn C64
- Basic for the future eh?) ³3.¹ Improving
- the quality of releases. If you have
- the money go for it! If you still
- don't believe me, look at the
- differences between 1.0-2.0 Zool and
- Streetfighter 2 and their A1200/4000
- counterparts. Enough said?
